Loud

daniel, hayato and me….

So there I was looking forward to a couple of days messing around in Paris, as one does, when Daniel from Apollo Heights called to tell me they were playing a show at La Fleche d’Or, and would I play guitar with them. Well, a normal person would make some excuse but Daniel is somewhat persuasive in his ways, which roughly means I can never say no to the motherfucker, and I found myself, guitar in hand at the venue, a really cool club built in a converted railway station. Now, what I did not write was that last week I played with them in Paris at Le Triptyque and it was, well, let us put it this way, if it had been good I would have written about it, right? But I was happy to meet up with them and do the show because just for one evening I could pretend to myself that I had a social life. I only played on a handful of songs this time, thinking it better to play the ones that I knew the chords for rather than standing like a prick watching them to see what I was meant to be doing and apart from a sound man who liked to change the balance three or four times per song, it was sort of fun. I kinda enjoyed when Francois, the other guitar player broke a string as I just took it upon myself to make a bit of a racket for a few minutes, paying scant regards to the ears of the audience, nor my own for that matter. Yup, loud is good, I really must get a band together so that I can play loud again.

  1. Hey, is that one of those new PRS models I see you playing above? Just saw it advertised in GP and it sure looks nice…two HB’s and a single coil…could give a guy many options for tone..and from below it seems that the Boston 1996 show tape never got a listen, you’d be proud of it…great show…ever think of playing Torrey, UT? Great place to grab a meal at the Cafe Diablo and read some feminist literature at the local book store..and play a gig….

  2. Oh wait a minute…..on closure inspection I noticed that the guitar above is none other than the Russell Fong Custom…LOUD!!!!!!! And the pickup configuration is just like the new PRS models hitting stores…..good to see you rocking out with the Fong Green Monster….!

nope, it’s a levinson blade with a chandler maple neck…. the russell fong that I have is red and gold leaf, a sort of upside down jazzmaster shape…

  4. Hey, I tried…it was hard to tell without a headstock…and the funky pickup configuration had me thinking in the custom realm…plus it looks like a toggle switch (below the bridge pickup) on the lower cutout/ horn towards the floor..which made me think the upside down Jazzmaster thing…hey, I did my best with the information there….I guess it’s just another freak in your very happening arsenal! Thanks for the clarification Robin. The crayon artist sure is growing fast!

  5. OMFG, he IS playing with the Apollo Heights!!!
You should get a band together. Play loud with proper ear plugs. Protect your ears.

now yer talkin!!! the dynamics of playing nice with others, as we were taught in kindergarten, are most rewarding…i don’t agree with the earplugs thing. i don’t see the point of it. music is supposed to make you feel better, not break your eardrums. i do think there is a very fine point to playing loud but not too loud…..it can be most exhilarating!!!! as you well obviously know, Jocko!!! i know some people with whom you’ve played splendidly…something about twins……let’s get busy here, dude. life is short!!!!

  7. YES! Apollo Heights are amazing. I’m so happy to see you playing with those guys again.

  8. Loud…I love it…

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and…
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it’s louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it’s one louder, isn’t it? It’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You’re on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you’re on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
